As reported in the latest issue of the Economic Indicators, unemployment rate worked out at 8.2% for the second quarter of 2012 compared to 8.0% at both the first quarter of 2012 and the second quarter of 2011. As at the second quarter of 2012 the total unemployed population comprised 20 100 males (41%) and 28 800 females (59%) out of which around 22 300 (46%) were below 25 years.
In a bid to help the unemployed to have access to employment opportunities the Employment Unit of the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment is vulgarising its Electronics Labour Exchange (ELE) platform, which is one of the component of the Labour Market Information System. ELE is a free online interactive platform put up specifically to facilitate interaction between employers and jobseekers.
ELE gives jobseekers the possibility to post their profile online with details such as personal qualifications and experience. Employers can advertise their vacancies and retrieve potential candidates from the database of jobseekers and there is provision for an automatic matching of jobseekers to vacancies.
Another benefit of the automatic online matching of ELE is that jobseekers may contact employers directly in connection with the vacancies and employers may select candidates from the list of jobseekers for possible interviews.
From January to September 2012 some 660 jobseekers have registered through the system and employers have advertised some 1100 job vacancies online. Moreover, the Ministry is encouraging employers and jobseekers to make efficient and effective use of the Electronic Labour Exchange platform which can be accessed on http://www.gov.mu/lmisweb.
