GIS - 28 October 2014: The second edition of the Mauritius Research Council (MRC) Post Graduate Conference 2014 will kick off on 30 October at the headquarters of the institution in Ebène. The objective of the two-day event is to provide a platform to MPhil/PhD students to present their respective progress regarding their research studies.
Some 21 students from the natural sciences and engineering as well as social sciences fields will thus be presenting their respective MPhil/PhD project in the form of a 20 minute presentation. Topics covered include biomedical and biopharmaceutical, energy efficiency and renewable energy, ocean technology and marine resources/ocean economy, water resources/water security, waste management and waste recycling, food security, land use, land transport and logistics, economics, social and financial services.
The presenters will also be required to submit a paper not exceeding 2,500 words, which will be compiled into a conference proceeding. Cash Prizes of Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 will be awarded to the best performers. The conference is open to the public. It is to be recalled that some 19 students participated in the first edition of the Post Graduate Conference, held in 2012.
MRC Post Graduate Award Scheme
The students are beneficiaries of the MRC Post Graduate Award Scheme which aims at offering sponsorship to graduates undertaking part-time research studies leading to an MPhil or PhD at a local tertiary education institution.
The MRC Postgraduate Award Scheme targets both unemployed and employed graduates. The Award covers registration and tuition fees of up to a maximum of Rs 40,000 per year. The Council will fund up to a maximum of three years for an MPhil degree and a maximum of five years for an MPhil/ PhD.
Currently, the MRC is providing sponsorship to 41 registered MPhil/PhD students who are undertaking their studies at the University of Mauritius, University of Technology, Mauritius, and the Open University of Mauritius. Since the inception of the scheme in 2005, four awardees have completed their studies.
