GIS - 13 May, 2013: The anti-influenza vaccination campaign 2013 for the elderly and the disabled was launched this morning by the Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions, Mrs. Sheilabai Bappoo, at the Municipal Town Council of Vacoas/Phoenix.
For this year, the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions has invested some Rs 7.9 million to buy the 75 000 doses of vaccine. Out of these 75 000 doses, some 3000 will be dispatched to Rodrigues. The vaccination campaign which will end on 11 June will cover the island through 70 regions.
The Ministry has, for the past twelve years, been providing anti-influenza vaccines to the elderly in order to prevent complications due to influenza and to improve their quality of life. It is also the policy of the Ministry to vaccinate inmates of charitable institutions.
However, only since 2010 that all elderly people aged 60 years and over are vaccinated, compared to only those above 65 years being vaccinated in previous years.
