GIS – 13 December, 2019: A two-day ‘Assises de l’Environnement’, aligned with the Governmental vision to implement the Sustainable Development Goals and its commitment to combat climate change, will be held, on 16 and 17 December 2019, at the Caudan Arts Centre, in Port-Louis.
The Assises, organised by the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, will bring together various stakeholders including representatives of Ministries, parastatal bodies, the private sector, academia, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, and the civil society.
The event will be launched in presence of the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, and the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano.
The key objective of the Assises is to provide a forum to discuss environmental issues with a view to adopting a concerted and participatory approach towards elaborating strategic orientations for a sustainable environment.  It also seeks to take stock of the concerns of citizens and their suggestions on the protection of the environment as well as to identify gaps between standard and actual practices in order to address challenges in the sector and come up with feasible measures for the short, medium and long term.  The aspirations of the society as a whole will be taken on board in order to create a strong sense of belonging towards the environment.
The Assises will be themed around: coastal areas and the marine life; biodiversity and natural resources; pollution; waste management and climate change, amongst others.
Ideas generated over the course of the national forum will be used for the formulation of a three-year Master Plan which will eventually be part of the new National Environmental Strategy for 2020-2030.
Following the Assises, a series of focused consultation meetings to elaborate policies and strategic orientations will be held.
