GIS - 16 July, 2014: The Tourism sector was the focus of a consultative meeting held yesterday in Port Louis under the chairmanship of the Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Mr Michael Yeung Sik Yuen, in the context of the 2015 budget preparation.
Minister Sik Yuen made an appeal to all stakeholders to work together with a view to consolidate the Mauritian destination and achieve a growth rate of 5% in that sector for 2015. He also spoke on measures taken by his Ministry to increase air access, diversify the Mauritian market and products namely: honeymoon, sports and conference.
The meeting was held in the presence of the Financial Secretary, Mr Dev Manraj, and representatives of all the stakeholders of the tourism sector.
The objective was to come up with an action plan to boost the tourism sector for the years to come. Discussions also centered on actions geared towards improving growth in that sector with emphasis on tapping new destination markets, encouraging more tourist arrivals, improved air services and filling hotels in low season.
This consultative meeting follows an announcement made by the Prime Minister on 27 June 2014 at the Annual Dinner of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry to the effect that Mauritius is now resolutely embarked upon a major transformation agenda underpinned by the attainment of the following three overriding and interrelated objectives namely, High Income, Inclusiveness and Sustainability. The ultimate purpose is to better serve the people, ensure their well-being and further improve their quality of life.
This meeting is the fourth of a series of consultative meetings after that of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector, financial services sector and the Manufacturing sector for incorporation in the 2015 budget.
