Democracy: Mauritius ranked 16th worldwide by Economist Intelligence Unit

GIS - 05 February, 2018: Mauritius is ranked 16thout of 167 countries as a full democracy with a score of 8,22 according to the Economist Intelligence Unit(EIU), released on Wednesday 31 January 2018. The country has taken giant leaps ahead of countries such as Spain, the United States and Italy in terms of democracy.
Mauritius has received the score of 8, 22 based on the following criteria: electoral process and pluralism: 9.17; functioning of Government: 8.21; political participation: 5.56; political culture: 8.75; and civil liberties: 9.4.
 
The EIU 2017 Democracy Index ranks 167 countries on a 0 to 10 scale, and only countries with scores above 8 are categorised as "full" democracies. Accordingly, less than 5% of the world's population lives in a "full democracy”.
 
The Scandinavian countries are at the top of the ranking, as concluded by the EIU Democracy Index.  Norway is placed at the first position with a score of 9.87, followed by Iceland and Sweden at the second and third place respectively. As for the United States, it has been ranked as “Flawed democracy”, placing it adjacent to Japan and Italy.
