GIS - 12 July, 2018: The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Ivan Collendavelloo effected a site visit this morning to take stock of the progress of works at Berthaud Road in Rose Hill. He was accompanied by the Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, Permanent Parliamentary Secretaries and the Mayors of Rose Hill and Quatre Bornes.
The upgrading and widening of the Berthaud Road over a length of 1,4 km is a project of the National Development Unit operating under the Prime Minister’s Office. To the tune of Rs 84 million, the new road has been designed for two-way traffic and will be a minimum of 6 metres wide with provisions made for 1.2 metres wide footpath on both sides and roadside drains on one side.
The objectives of the project are to enhance transport efficiencies in the region, reduce transportation costs, reduce road maintenance costs and road accidents, enhance road safety and improve road infrastructure. Works which have started in May 2018 are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
In a statement to the press, Deputy Prime Minister Collendavelloo underlined that the upgrading of Berthaud Road is in line with Government’s vision to bring the benefits of socio-economic development at the doorstep of the population. He pointed out that several projects have been undertaken in Rose Hill especially in regions such as Stanley, Trèfles and Berthaud. They include: the upgrading of the Balfour Garden, the renovation of Plaza, construction of mediclinic and social centre and upgrading of football pitch.
For her part, Vice-Prime Minister Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo stated that the priority of the Government is to bring development and new projects so as to enhance the quality of life of the population and make their lives easier. Other major projects in Rose Hill include the construction of a market, a Multi Sports Complex, and the third phase of Plaza, she added.
Speaking about the Berthaud Road Project, she highlighted that it is a major project which comprises the widening of the road, construction of a bridge, installation of Central Water Authority pipes, electricity cables and telephone lines.
The project starts at its Junction with Guy Rozemont Avenue up to its junction with Ollier Avenue.
The works to be executed involve, amongst others, the following:
¨ Construction of approximately 1.4 km of road with 6 m carriageway
¨ Provision of various drainage structures along the road
¨ Provision of miscellaneous road equipment such as carriageway markings, street lighting, traffic signs, and handrails
¨ Supply, installation and commissioning of about 2.3 km of potable water pipelines for pipes of diameter ranging from 160 mm to 250 mm
¨ Supply, installation and commissioning of electricity ducts, draw pits and Transformer rooms
¨ Supply, installation and commissioning of telecoms ducts and manholes
¨ Construction of a bridge of 11.5 m
