GIS - 26 October, 2018: The Pailles Guibies Sewerage Project – Phase 1 has been implemented by the Wastewater Management Authority (WMA) with a view to alleviate the sanitation problems in the region, following numerous complaints received from inhabitants of the locality.
The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Ivan Collendavelloo, made this statement yesterday at the inauguration of the Pailles Guibies Sewerage Pumping station, at Grand River North West (GRNW). The Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment, Mr Alain Wong, and other eminent personalities were also present.
In his address, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the project area lies within the Pailles, Les Guibies and GRNW regions, starting from Les Guibies along St Louis Stream No. 2, the St Louis River to end at the GRNW Pumping station. The project, he stated, covers the regions of Bonnefin Road, Michael Leal, Guibies, Morcellement Anse Courtois (Morcellement Bangladesh), Morcellement Raffray, Morcellement Fong Sing, Morcellement Le Roc, Domaine St Louis, Cite Mon Plaisir, Pailles Road, Camp Chapelon, Cite La Butt14e, Cite Jonction, Roshan Road, Cite St Louis, Pont St Louis, Cite La Butte, Cite Pailles Junction, Pailles Road, Cite Mauvillac, Grand River North West and Canal Dayot.
He underscored that the WMA has implemented the Pailles Guibies Sewerage Project – Phase 1, following numerous complaints received from the inhabitants of this locality and it has been completed according to established parameters and without cost overrun. These inhabitants, he pointed out, are experiencing recurrent nuisance problems with their wastewater disposal system due to cesspits not operating properly as a result of poor absorption capacity of the soil and high water table.
About the project
In 1992, the Government of Mauritius launched the Sewerage Master Plan under the Environmental Investment Programme to identify and provide long term solutions for the treatment and safe disposal of municipal and industrial waste waters. Among the various projects, the Pailles Guibies Sewerage Project was earmarked to be implemented.
The Pailles Guibies Sewerage Project – Phase 1, to the tune of some Rs 240 million, consists of the construction of Trunk Sewers TS4 and TS3, as well as a Pumping station at GRNW. The works at the Pump station comprise the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of all necessary plant and equipment, besides the associated civil works, all located next to the mouth of the GRNW river. The total length of the sewers constructed is 3.35 kilometres and consist mostly of GRP pipes, ranging from 400 to 600 mm in diameter.
