Festival Internasional Kreol 2019 to be marked by key activities to promote Creole culture

GIS - 29 November, 2019: The 14th edition of the Festival Internasional Kreol will be held as from 05 December 2019 to 08 December 2019 and will be marked by a series of activities and key events, announced the Minister of Tourism, Mr Georges Pierre Lesjongard, yesterday, during a press conference held at the Labourdonnais Hotel in Port-Louis.
The Minister recalled that this key event is an opportune time to celebrate and showcase the authenticity of the Creole culture, namely its local music, arts, language and cuisine. The Festival Internasional Kreol, he said, is a national celebration of the local culture and at the same time will attract tourists to discover the sociocultural fabric of Mauritius. 
Minister Lesjongard highlighted that a series of activities has been organised under the theme ‘Kreolite nou Larmonie', to represent and showcase the Creole culture and promote harmony in the country. He indicated that the event is being held with the joint collaboration of various Ministries including the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage as well as the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.  An Organising Committee has been set up under the chair of the Minister of Tourism to ensure that the event is a success, he added.
Moreover, he expressed satisfaction as regards the high level of interest shown by local artists to take part in the event and indicated that the selection exercise will be completed shortly. He urged the population to participate in the series of activities that will be held and to further discover and forge their Creole culture.
Speaking about the activities on the agenda, the Minister indicated that key event will see the participation of some 108 local and international artists. He observed that this year’s event will be marked by the participation of countries including Reunion Island, the Seychelles, Rodrigues and Agalega, which will further promote the Creole culture in the region.
Also present on the occasion, Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, emphasised that the event has attained considerable international importance through the years, and this year it is being organised in the best conditions, to further bring forth the Creole culture on both the local and international scene.
He underlined that one key Creole heritage, the traditional Mauritian Sega Tipik, will be one of the core focus of the event, and recalled that this performing art which is emblematic of the Creole community, forms part of the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.  On that note, Minister Teeluck, underscored the essence of the Festival Internasional Kreol, which is to safeguard such cultural heritage.
Mr Teeluck called for the participation of the population to this key national event, that according to him, will enable the population to celebrate the Creole heritage and cement the Mauritian culture.
The 14th edition of the Festival Internasional Kreol will comprise of: the opening ceremony and ‘Sware Poezi’ at Balaclava on 05 December 2019; ‘sega lontan’ in tribute to local artist Roger Clency at the Stadium of Pere Laval in St Croix as well as ‘Sware tipik’ at Le Morne on the 06 December 2019; a conference on 07 December 2019 on the theme of the challenges facing the Creole culture and language,  regrouping local and international speakers will be held at Balaclava; and three concerts as from 18 00 hrd to 01 00 hrs will be held in Flacq, Bambous and Cassis. On the 08 December 2019, three competitions of Regat, a festival Kiliner and an exhibition with the participation of Agalega, the Chagos Archipelago and Rodrigues will be held at Mahebourg. Also on the agenda is the ‘Sinema an Plenner’, which will broadcast short movies produced by Mauritians.
