GIS - Mar 26, 2012: The shortage of skilled labour in the construction sector in Mauritius, which is causing growing concern among companies and HR professionals, will be the main theme of discussions of a one-day workshop scheduled on Wednesday, 28 March 2012 at Cyber Tower 1, Ebène at the initiative of the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC).
The aim of the workshop is to finalise, through input from stakeholders, the findings of a survey carried out by the HRDC in August-September 2011. The main objectives were to assess the current situation of labour shortage in the construction sector; identify the immediate and future specific skills requirement; identify the profile of employees required by employers and make recommendations for policy makers to devise strategies to reduce the labour mismatch. Some 97 companies involved in construction of buildings, civil engineering works, building installation and building completion have participated in the survey.
About 90 HR professionals from the construction sector will, in the course of discussions in the workshop, share views, validate the findings of the survey in a view to developing an effective human resource development strategy. The final report of the HRDC will provide new insights for crafting comprehensive policies that would address skill mismatch and its consequences in the construction sector.
Issues that will be discussed during the workshop include the evolution of the local construction sector and its contribution to the economy, green technologies and green buildings. Discussions will also focus on labour shortage; staff recruiting and retaining, skills requirement and employment trends in the sector and the findings and recommendations of the HRDC research and consultancy team.
