IOR-ARC: 12th Council of Ministers Meeting to be held in Gurgaon, India
GIS - October 25, 2012: The 12th Council of Ministers Meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) will be held from 29 October to 2 November 2012, in Gurgaon, Haryana, India.
Mauritius will be participating in the event which will be preceded by working groups on commerce and industry.  These events will bring together around 220 delegates from 19 Member States.  The Meeting will facilitate a review of the status of the projects of the IOR-ARC.  It will also provide the platform for initiating fresh proposals of cooperation that will be tabled for consideration by the Council of Ministers Meeting scheduled on 2 November.
The Ministerial Meetings have over the years endorsed a number of projects to be included in IOR-ARC’s Work Programme.  These are:
• Regional Centre for Science and Transfer of Technology
• University Student Mobility Program for the Indian Ocean Region
• Tourism Feasibility Study Project
• Maritime Transport Council
• Opportunities for Construction within IOR-ARC
• Promoting Cultural Cooperation
• Preferential Trade Agreement for interested Member States
• Fisheries Support Unit
The IOR-ARC was launched in 1997 in Mauritius.  The objectives of the IOR-ARC are to promote the sustained growth and balanced development of the region and of the Member States, and to create common ground for regional cooperation amongst others.  Members are Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
The highest authority of the Association is the Council of (Foreign) Ministers (COM), which meets annually or more often as mutually decided. The COM formulates policy, reviews progress on cooperation, make decisions on new areas of cooperation and on the establishment of additional mechanisms and specialised agencies and decisions on matters of general interest.
The 11th Meeting of the COM was held in November 2011 in Bengaluru, India.
