Indian Ocean Island Games: Team-building Gathering for ‘Club Maurice’

GIS - 23 July 2015: The last team-building gathering of Mauritian athletes who will be competing at the forthcoming 9th Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion Island was held yesterday at Hôtel Tamassa, in Bel Ombre.
The Mauritius flag bearer for the Games (Kamil Patel - tennis) and the captains for the masculine and feminine teams Richarno Colin (boxing) and Jessica Rosun (javelin), were officially presented.
Organised by ‘Club Maurice’ in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the gathering brought together athletes who will represent the country at the Games, as well as the respective national coaches.  Mauritius is competing in 14 disciplines, namely: athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, weightlifting, handball, judo, swimming, sailing, tennis, table tennis, and volleyball.
In his address on that occasion, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Yogida Sawmynaden, called upon the Mauritian team to uphold the honour of the country while working in unity and discipline to bring the best possible results.
It is recalled that the Games will be held from 1st to 9 August 2015.The Mauritian delegation to the Games comprises approximately 480 members (athletes, coaches and officials).  Other participating countries are Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives, Mayotte, Réunion and Seychelles.
The Games
The Indian Ocean Island Games are a multi-sports event held every four years among athletes from Indian Ocean islands. The Games were adopted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1976.
The objectives are to contribute to regional cooperation through the development of sport in the region, build friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of the islands of the Indian Ocean, in the spirit of the Olympics.
