GIS – 11 December 2015: ‘Mauritius can raise the bar and match the capacity that exists in other countries.  It is the people that make countries thrive and flourish.  Despite that we may not possess the same resources, yet, we do have a strong will, an indomitable grit and an unflinching determination and above all, we have brains’, said the Minister of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, at the Octave Wiehe Auditorium, in Le Réduit.
The Minister was speaking on 9 December 2015 at the graduation ceremony of the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) for students having completed the Teacher Diploma Primary, Teacher Diploma Secondary, Diploma in Educational Management and Post Graduate Certificate Education, amongst other courses.
In her address, the Minister observed that the intellect knows no geographical boundaries, as in fact, it transcends them.  However, that will lead us nowhere unless there is the right launch pad, and this launch pad is a revamped education system and we have it in us to go to a higher level of learning outcomes, she pointed out.
Mrs Dookun-Luchoomun also noted that above everyone else, as from today, the graduands are the ones to drive and execute the change, with her Ministry working towards bringing the changes, alongside the ideas.  ‘What you have felt on your graduation, I would like your learners to feel the same.  Give them the same sense – not only of success but of achievement – that you have experienced in your own way today.  Only then will we know that our work and our belief have been worth it’, she added.
The MIE operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research.
Set up in 1973 with the prime objective of modernising the education sector and endowing it with a professional teaching workforce, the MIE provides training for the pre-primary, primary and secondary sectors of education, targeting all cadres, including teaching and management.
The training provided is in line with state of the art pedagogical practices and the constant benchmarking of courses offered according to international standards ensures that the qualifications delivered by the MIE are recognised around the world.
