GIS - 09 August, 2018: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at further strengthening the cooperative sector was signed yesterday in the presence of the Minister of Business, Enterprise and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah in Port-Louis.
The signatories were the Chairman of the Mauritius Cooperative Alliance Ltd (MCAL), Mr D. Kona Yerukunondu, and the Chief Executive of National Cooperative Union of India, Mr N. Satyanarayana.
Minister Bholah underlined that the MoU will help consolidate bilateral relations between the two countries in the following areas of cooperation: capacity building through exchange of experts for the development of cooperatives; exploring the possibility of holding joint workshops on issues of mutual interest and best practices for development of cooperatives; and enabling visits and training of co-operators.
He highlighted that the cooperative sector in India which exists since 1929 has witnessed huge success in the field of sugarcane, dairy products and credit unions, amongst others. He emphasised that India should take pride of its vibrant cooperative sector and should continue extending its support for further development of cooperatives in Mauritius. On this score, he pointed out that Mauritian co-operators will soon benefit from training by Indian experts.
The Minister also announced the official inauguration of the National Cooperative College which is scheduled for 09 August 2018 with the aim to provide appropriate training to potential entrepreneurs so as to encourage them to group themselves into cooperative societies and operate in an efficient manner.
For his part, the Chairman of the MCAL, Mr D. Kona Yerukunondu, underscored that Mauritius is seeking the assistance of India since it has a very strong and well-structured cooperative movement. The MoU, he added, reiterates India’s continuous involvement in supporting the development of the cooperative sector in Mauritius.
