GIS – 26 August 2019: The Mauritius Liverpool International Academy was launched on Friday 23 August 2019, by the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, at the Cȏte d’Or Multi-sports complex.
Several personalities including the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint, Mr Bruce Grobbelaar, former goalkeeper, Mr Dan White, Vice-President of the LFC Soccer Schools and Mr Neil Murphy, former professional footballer and Coach , all of the Liverpool Academy, were present. The Champion leagues trophy was also on display on the occasion.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted that the setting up of the Liverpool International Academy in Mauritius is indeed a major game changer in the history of Mauritian sports. The decision to set up this Academy, announced as a 2019-2020 budgetary measure, forms part of the fundamental reforms in the sports and physical activity sector, he recalled. It essentially aims at encouraging citizens to engage in sports and become more active, he emphasised.
Prime Minister underlined that the Liverpool International Academy project constitutes a key priority of Government’s strategy regarding the boosting of the sports sector includes identifying and tapping into youths’ talents at an early stage to enable their full development. Following the successful agreement between Mauritius Multisports Infrastructure Ltd, and LFC and Athletics Grounds Ltd, the Liverpool International Academy will offer training, for a period of three years, to the local football players based on a programme and curriculum elaborated and currently being used by the LFC, Mr Jugnauth announced.
According to the Prime Minister, the training will help increase the level of standards of sports activities in the country while offering young talents opportunities. It will also significantly help to boost and improve the level of football performance on both local and international platforms, he remarked.
This project, stated Mr Jugnauth, is the first international sports academy of the series of state-of-the-art sports performance training facilities that will be offered to local athletes. The Prime Minister expressed conviction that these high-level trainings will help to prepare athletes to compete at the highest level in their particular sport and enable them to compete brilliantly at international competitions. On that note, he announced that discussions are ongoing for the setting up of an Athletics Academy to offer elite coaching to local athletes.
Prime Minister Jugnauth also noted with satisfaction the enthusiasm and high level of interest that local youths are demonstrating to gain admittance to the Mauritius Liverpool International Academy, while indicating that some 2,400 registrations have been received so far. The selection exercise of the 17 coaches will be completed shortly while the first batch of the 256 trainees will be finalised by mid-September, which will all be supervised by the Head Coach of the LIA Mauritius, Mr Neil Murphy, he indicated.
LFC International Football Academy
The LFC International Football Academy Mauritius is the 30th one to be set up in the world and the second in an African country after Egypt. The agreement between Mauritius and the LFC spans over a period three years. The Academy will target young Mauritians aged 12 years to 15 years and provide age-specific coaching sessions for players to improve their football skills as well as their technical, tactical, physical, social and mental abilities. A wide range of year-round programmes are planned to begin during the year, including ongoing player development sessions and soccer schools during the holiday season. The three-year programme will target a maximum of 256 trainees in the first year, 512 trainees in the second year and 768 in the third year.
