GIS - 02 May, 2013: The Government of Mauritius through the Ministry of Fisheries is hosting the 17th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) Meeting from 6 to 10 May. The IOTC is an intergovernmental organisation mandated to manage tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean. Its objective is to promote cooperation among its Members with a view to ensuring, through appropriate management, the conservation and optimum utilisation of stocks and encouraging sustainable development of fisheries based on such stocks. The Commission meeting expects participation from its 31 Contracting Parties, 2 Cooperating Non-Contracting Parties, as well as observers from inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations.
The 17th Session will be preceded by the 10th Session of the Compliance Committee from 2 to 4 May. The Compliance Committee will review the progress of Members of the IOTC in the implementation of the Conservation and Management Measures that the Member states have adopted in areas such as provision of data on the activities of the fisheries, port inspection, observer scheme and other reporting requirements.
Some of the issues that will be debated during the 17th Session of the Commission are the review of the work of the Commission for the past year, to reinforce and seek improvement in areas such as a possible catch documentation scheme, elimination of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, data reporting and other possible Conservation and Management measures to ensure sustainability of the resources.  The Commission will also review the report of its Scientific Committee on the status of the various resources of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean.
