GIS - August 1, 2012: Mauritius will host the 6th edition of the mini Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) on 27-28 October 2012 at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Moka. At a press briefing held in Port Louis yesterday, the minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Choonee, pointed out that it was an honour for Mauritius to host the event.
A mini PBD is a regular annual conference held outside India as an overseas diaspora meeting every calendar year. It has been held successively in New York, Singapore, the Hague, Durban and Toronto since 2007. The concept of the mini PBD is based on requests received over the years from various countries to organize such meeting outside India and allow the Indian diaspora to benefit from the interaction.
The PBD is a platform for discussing cultural and socioeconomic issues concerning the Indian diaspora and is an annual event held every year in January in India. It is organised by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India, and aims at integrating the expertise of the Indian overseas community with the development processes of India.
It is believed that the PBD has played a significant role in furthering the commitment of the diaspora towards India.
