GIS - Dec 20, 2012: The Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions, Mrs. Sheila Bappoo yesterday visited the Foyer Trochetia (FT), located at Petit Verger, Pointe aux Sables, in the context of “Christmas Celebration”. She also proceeded with the distribution of gifts to residents of the shelter.
For Minister Bappoo, one of the policies of her Ministry is to encourage the family to maintain, as far as possible, their elderly parents at home. However, on account of various life circumstances, the elderly persons are compelled to seek admission in Residential Care Homes. The elderly persons with multi disabilities are more and more in need of specialised care and support.
However, as the FT is functioning at full capacity, it is not able to meet the increasing demands for admission. This is already indicative that such services are in demand and the Foyer would require extension.
In this regard, Sheila Bappoo announced that her Ministry has already started with the extension of one living unit (Unit 3) to accommodate 16 residents in 2013, the cost of which is approximately Rs 7.2 Million. The construction of the new living unit will be completed in February 2013 and it will be operational as from March 2013.
The FT is unique in its kind in Mauritius. It is constructed on a portion of land of 9286 square metres which has involved an investment of Euro 868,000 representing cost of construction, furniture, modern accessories and high tech medical equipment.
The FT is a Public Private Partnership project which is managed jointly by the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions, and the Arya Sabha Mauritius. It currently caters for 32 severely disabled elderly persons accommodated in two living units.
