GIS – 27 July, 2018: Residence Pierre de Lune, comprising 73 NHDC housing Units, was inaugurated yesterday by the Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Purmanund Jhugroo, during a ceremony at Petit Bel Air. The project, to the tune of Rs 88.4 million, kicked off in May 2015.
The Managing Director of the National Housing Development Co Ltd (NHDC), Mr Gilles L’Entêté, the Government Chief Whip, Mr Mahendranuth Hurreeram, and other personalities were also present.
In his address, Minister Jhugroo spoke of Government’s priorities which include construction of housing units for people at different rungs of the social ladder as well as fighting absolute poverty. He pointed out that since the beginning of 2015, many recreational facilities have been provided on each site of NHDC projects such as green spaces, children playground, pétanque court and health track. Since January 2015 to date, 2 171 housing units have already been constructed and 3 041 houses are presently under construction, he stated, adding that a procurement exercise is being finalised for the construction of an additional 6 800 housing units in various regions around the island.
He emphasised that the NHDC has an established eligibility criteria for the allocation of housing units and encouraged the beneficiaries present to take care of their housing units and of the recreational facilities at their disposal. Mr Jhugroo cautioned that persons who, having been allocated a housing unit after fulfilling all criteria, do not respect the conditions established by the NHDC would face severe legal actions and the housing unit will be allocated to another beneficiary.
The Minister stressed that Government appreciates the efforts of those who are striving to better their life and that of their family, adding that Government will endeavour to provide the relevant support. He also outlined the introduction of the National Minimum Wage and the Negative Income Tax, and broadening of the categories of households eligible for the Roof Slab Grant Scheme, which are in line with Government’s aim to provide better assistance to vulnerable groups.
For his part, the Government Chief Whip, Mr Mahendranuth Hurreeram expressed his appreciation for the work done by the NHDC in order to help needy Mauritian families and urged beneficiaries to take care of Residence Pierre de Lune. He further underlined that Budget 2018-2019 makes provision for necessary funds required to build additional housing units for those in need.
The Managing Director of the NHDC, for his part, stated that the NHDC will continue to collaborate with Government in order to help the most vulnerable of society. He also encouraged beneficiaries to live in harmony and help each other.
