GIS - 11 October, 2018: Trainings in the field of housekeeping operations and plumbing/pipe fitting, for two batches of fifteen beneficiaries of the Social Register of Mauritius, were launched yesterday by the Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment, Mr. Alain Wong, in Port Louis.
The training, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment, the National Empowerment Foundation and the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development, spans from October 2018 to March 2019 and comprises job placements. Trainees will receive a stipend of Rs 5 000 and travel allowance of Rs 1 000. Starting toolkits were also provided to trainees.
In his address, Minister Wong highlighted that the training is one of the various Government endeavours to alleviate poverty and promote social inclusion. He pointed out that the training aims at professionalising the services of the skilled-workers by equipping them with the necessary skills and providing them with certificates upon successful completion to enhance their employability. The objective, he added, is to empower the vulnerable through education so that they are able to attain financial stability and independence to pave their way out of deprived situations.
The Minister emphasised that vocational educational offers job-specific technical training for skilled works can lead to certification and job opportunities as academic education does. Skilled jobs are in high demand and can be as rewarding as white-collar jobs, if they are undertaken with professionalism, he stated. On that score, Mr Wong observed that skilled workers should be prepared to undertake tasks with different specificities that require accuracy and precision, ability to operate machine and handle equipment, amongst others.
Government, he said, recognises the contribution of all categories of workers and seeks to enhance the professionalism of the skilled labour category. The Minister underlined the importance of finance education that enables one to have excellent budget management to guide spending according to priorities and prevent over-indebtedness. According to him, budget management is imperative for entrepreneurs who will be called upon to delegate work within a restricted budget and resources.
