GIS – 18 June 2015: For the first time, a mega concert will be held on Saturday 20 June 2015 at the Mahebourg Waterfront from 18 00 hrs to midnight in the context of Music Day, announced the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Santaram Baboo, this morning at a press conference in Port Louis.
The concert, an initiative of the Ministry of Arts and Culture, will group several artists and organisations, namely Le Conservatoire National de Musique François-Mitterrand; Telugu Cultural Centre; Marathi Cultural Centre; China Cultural Centre; Rishi Rapoojee; Alain Ramanisum and Laura Beg; Mr Love; Mary Jane Gaspard; Sky Crew; Gary Victor; Tritonik; Mulaeo; Maroner; Bwa Marron; Ras Nininn; DJ Blind; and Groupe Big.
The Minister recalled that Music Day is a great opportunity for musicians of all ages, amateur or professional, to showcase their talents. Music Day was launched on 21 June 1982, at the initiative of Mr Jack Lang, the then French Minister of Culture, he said, adding that it has been celebrated in Mauritius since 1986.
The purpose of this event is to promote music through cultural programmes and make all genres of music accessible to the public. According to Mr Baboo, a series of activities have been programmed in the context of Music Day 2015 by his Ministry in collaboration with other Ministries, Local Authorities and stakeholders.
One of the main activities is the cultural programme that will be held at Rivière du Rempart Youth Centre on 21 June 2015 from 17 00 hrs to 19 00 hrs. All the Centre de Lecture Publique et d’Animation Culturelle, schools and cultural centres are also celebrating Music Day this week.
