GIS - 11 March, 2020: Some nine beneficiaries of the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF) who followed a six-month training course on Electrical Installation Works received certificates and toolkits, yesterday, in presence of the Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, in Port-Louis.
The objective is to empower the vulnerable members of the society and further develop their skills and talents so that they enter the job market for a decent living. The training course was conducted by the professionals of the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development with the support of the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions.
In her keynote address, Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo lauded the initiative of the NEF which, she said, is geared towards integrating those at the bottom of the ladder in the socio-economic activity of the country and improving their life chances. She stated that various measures such as a rise in the pension rate for the elderly, introduction of the National Minimum Wage and the Negative Income Tax system, have been put in place with the aim to alleviate poverty and lay the foundation for social progress.
Government, she stressed, is doing all its effort to provide assistance to the vulnerable people but it is equally important for each and every one to double their personal efforts to strive for financial stability and independence. To this end, she congratulated all the persons who, with their determination and hard work, have been able to successfully complete the course.
The Minister also underlined that some of the participants have been recruited by a private company which demonstrates the keen interest of the private sector to support the Government in widening job opportunities for the underprivileged.
