GIS - 10 August, 2015: The Prime Minister, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, congratulated all the athletes who have participated in the 9th Indian Ocean Islands Games, which were held in Réunion Island. He had a special mention for the handisport athletes. The Prime Minister underlined that our athletes have honoured the country with their sense of sportsmanship and their patriotism along with their sacrifices.
In a statement to the press today at the Treasury Building in Port Louis, the Prime Minister acknowledged and saluted the efforts of the athletes and underlined that their hard work has paid off. He called upon the youth to inspire themselves from the hard work of our athletes. He rejoiced that it was the first time that Mauritius won so many medals in the games. (Total of 185 medals: 66 gold; 49 silver; and 70 bronze).
Prime Minister Jugnauth expressed concern that the desired results were not achieved in the following disciplines: football, volleyball and basketball. He stated that, without neglecting other sport disciplines, necessary actions will be undertaken by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to address the various issues so as to improve the level in these particular sport disciplines.
Government will provide the necessary framework and means to consolidate and further strengthen sports activities in the country, he added.
