GIS - 25 Feb 2013: The Price Observatory recently released its assessment of the price of commodities on the local market for the month of January 2013.
The cheapest district was Pamplemousses for all 3 lists of products. Port-Louis was highest-priced for all products combined as well as the 40 “cheapest” products, while Black River was the highest-priced for the 20 branded products.
The price difference between the lowest and highest-priced district was Rs. 655 (24%) for the “cheapest”, Rs. 353 (13%) for branded and Rs. 966 (17%) for all products combined.
It is observed that the price difference between the cheapest and the highest-priced outlet was Rs. 1,269 (58%) for the 40 products compared to Rs. 685 (27%) for the 20 branded items. Thus, the variation in price across outlets was much less for the branded products. The price difference for all products taken together was Rs. 1,954 (41%).
For the 40 “cheapest” products, 37 prices (4.2%) were not available, whereas for the branded items there were 40 (9.1%) missing prices. Overall, the number of missing prices was 77 (5.8%) out of a total of 1,320 prices (60 items x 22 outlets).
Moreover, for the 40 “cheapest” products, the number of promotional prices was 472 (54%) compared to 107 (24%) for the branded products. The total number of promotional prices was 579 (44%).
