GIS - Feb 21, 2013: “The landscape of the country is changing comprehensively, we have many sites under construction, and there is coherence in what we are doing: improve connectivity and offer modern infrastructures”, the Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, stated yesterday afternoon at the opening of the Port Louis Ring Road (Phase 1), in Pailles.

Thus, according to him, there are several governmental projects underway to build, enhance and connect more roads, in line with proactive policies espoused by Government. “This Phase 1 of the Ring Road is costing us Rs 1.3 billion, and prior to its construction there were two surveys conducted to analyse the topography of the area and also to look at compulsory land acquisition”, the Prime Minister added. Dr. Ramgoolam also praised the efforts, dedication and sincerity of the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping, Mr. Anil Bachoo.

Moreover, the Prime Minister stated that Government has made a massive investment over the last few years in public infrastructure despite the difficult worldwide economic backdrop. “Despite a satisfactory growth last year, we must still strive to do better”, he said. According to him, road traffic congestion can cost the country up to Rs 3 billion each year. In this regard, he said, three new Fitness centres where examinations of vehicles for fitness will be much stricter, will soon be operational.

For his part, Minister Anil Bachoo enumerated the different projects of the Government in line with the Road Decongestion Programme, as well as other infrastructural projects to enhance day-to-day living and connectivity in all constituencies around the country. He also dismissed critics and criticisms received from emanating from certain quarters.

The completed Ring Road, i.e. including both Phase 1 and Phase 2, will be a circular track consisting of a 1.3 kilometre-tunnel under the mountain. It will start from Sorèze, near Montebello and will go through Guibies, Domaine les Pailles. It will pass through the mountain and come out on Justice Street, near the Chinese pagoda and Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation. It will then take the direction of Colline Monneron, and will reach Pamplemousses Road through Vallée Pitot. Finally, it will take the Military Road to connect to the harbour roundabout on the M2. The aim is to make traffic to and from the capital fluid. This will also reduce accidents and will provide alternate access to Port Louis from the south.
