GIS – 21 May, 2020The Prime Minister, Mr. Pravind Jugnauth, announced the presentation of the Budget 2020/21 for 4 June 2020, and stressed that the first and foremost priority of his Government is to preserve employment, in a statement to the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) tonight. He also answered questions regarding the forthcoming Budget and the impact of the Covid-19 on the Mauritian economy.

He spoke of his meeting this afternoon, with the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr. Renganaden Padayachy, in the presence of the Financial Secretary, Mr. Dev Manraj, to take stock of the three days of pre-budget consultations which ended today.

Following this meeting, the Prime Minister answered questions from the MBC. He recalled that this is an unprecedented crisis and no one knows when it will end. “We, therefore, need to prepare for the many challenges that will come our way,” he added.

He made an appeal to all stakeholders to collaborate so as to get the country out of this crisis and back on track. He also spoke about several issues, namely on the measures taken by the authorities to preserve employment, guarantee the salaries of employees, and financially assist the most vulnerable of the society and those working in the informal sector.

Recalling that, according to the International Monetary Fund, the world economy will not recover before several years, Mr. Jugnauth stressed that his Government has set as specific priorities the relaunch of investments and economic activities in the country.

As for the Covid-19 situation in Mauritius, the Prime Minister believes that the measures implemented to limit the spread of the virus, have proved successful as the country has not recorded any new positive case since the last three weeks.
