Prime Minister reiterates Government’s Commitment to Improve Quality of Life

GIS – 30 August, 2018: Government is committed in improving the quality of life of all citizens in terms of infrastructure, services and benefits.  The projects being currently undertaken are aimed at spearheading development for the long-term progress of the country and its population. This also includes the determination to wage a war against the proliferation of drugs in Mauritius so as to protect the population and particularly the youth from this scourge.
 
The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement yesterday in L’Escalier.  He was speaking at the L’Escalier Social Welfare Centre where various facilities were inaugurated.  These facilities include a children’s traffic playground, an extension of the Centre, an antique museum and a petanque court.
 
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the relentless efforts of the Police Force in directing Government’s anti-drug campaign aiming at tackling the drug scourge across Mauritius.  He observed that Police Officers regularly engage in risky and life-endangering tasks to dismantle drug-related activities and commended them for their integrity and commitment which has led to an unprecedented number of crackdown operations leading to arrests.
 
Speaking about the importance of Social Welfare Centres, the Prime Minister emphasised that these Centres community are dedicated spaces for social upliftment, empowerment and integration of local communities.  The new facilities being provided at the L’Escalier Social Welfare Centre will contribute to encourage and support recreational, intellectual and social activities within the community, he stated.
 
Prime Minister Jugnauth emphasised that the Metro Express project will revolutionise the infrastructural landscape of the country while the upcoming new ENT hospital, the new state-of-the-art Cancer Centre and Teaching Hospital in Flacq will contribute to improve healthcare services.
 
He also elaborated on various  measures put in place by Government to provide financial support to the population in particular the vulnerable ones, namely: the Minimum wage, the Negative Income Tax, the Basic Retirement pension, the Marshall Plan and subsidies on essential goods.
 
The Prime Minister underlined that other major projects are in the pipeline and comprise a recreation centre for senior citizens in Mahebourg, a market in Chemin Grenier and a reservoir in Rivière des Anguilles.
