Prison Officers Awarded Medals for Long Service and Good Conduct

GIS – 19 December, 2018: The long service and good conduct medals were presented to Prison Officers yesterday during a Medal Award Ceremony held at the Prison Training School, in Beau Bassin in presence of the Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Premananda Appadoo, and the relatives of the medal recipients.
A total of 30 officers received the National Award (First Claps, Second Claps and Third Claps), 49 officers received the Honorary Award, 69 were promoted as Lead Prison Officers, 35 retired officers were rewarded and three families received the Posthumous Award for officers who have passed away during the year 2018.
In his address, the Commissioner of Prisons emphasised that responsibility, dedication and hard work are the essential values that should always drive Prison Officers in their duties.  Prison Officers, he underlined, have the crucial role of upholding law and order in the penal system and should therefore carry out their duties in an effective and efficient manner for a safer Mauritius through best correctional practices.
The Commissioner of Prisons pointed out that several measures, in line with the respect of human rights, have been put in place at the level of the Mauritius Prison Service to ensure that detainees live in a discipline environment.  These measures also include the provision of educational and vocational training programmes for detainees.  As regards Prison Officers who have retired this year, Mr Appadoo commended their efforts and sacrifices as well as their vast contribution in the progress achieved by the prison service.
A Parade accompanied by the Prison Band, was also held to symbolically pay farewell to retired Prison Officers.
