GIS - 21 August, 2014: The authorities in Qatar have solicited the consultancy service of top officers of the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment in view of assisting them in improving the Occupational Safety and Health services in their country.
In this context the Director of the Occupational Safety and Health division of the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment and the Chief Occupational Safety and Health officer are currently on an official visit in Qatar. The aim is to carry out a study on the state of Occupational Safety and Health in Qatar.
This mission follows discussions that the Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment, Mr Shakeel Mohamed, had with his counterpart from Qatar, Mr Abdullah Saleh Al Khulaifi, during the 103rd session of the International Labour Conference held in June this year in Geneva.
Several meetings with senior officials of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the State of Qatar are scheduled. Discussions will focus on: Occupational Safety and Health legislation; Institutional framework; and Enforcement and Employees Lodging Accommodation.
Other issues to be covered are namely: establishment of a National Policy on Occupational Safety and Health in Qatar; ratification of Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155); ratification of Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention 2006 (No.187); and establishment of a National Occupational Safety and Health programme.
The authorities in Qatar has shown interest to seek the Mauritian expertise due to the fact that the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment, has a good repute at the international level in the field of Occupational Safety and Health.
