GIS – 14 November 2018: The second edition of the Jeux des Jeunes Talents 2018, aiming to promote sporting practice among youngsters aged between 12 and 13 years old as well as detect talents of young athletes, kicked off today at the Maryse Justin Stadium in Réduit. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint, and other eminent personalities were present at the opening ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Minister Toussaint underlined that the games which has brought together some 2000 boys and girls provide a platform for these youngsters to engage in different sporting activities during the period of school holidays. He emphasised that their participation in such games will enable them stay physically fit and forge friendship ties with other young people. As ambassadors, youngsters are called upon to transmit sporting values to their peers so as not to become prey of social ills, he added.
The Minister also seized the opportunity, on the occasion coinciding with the World Diabetes Day 2018, to encourage each and everyone to practice sports activities for a healthier lifestyle. As regards boosting the confidence of the youngsters, he appealed to them to perform at their fullest for optimal results in their respective sports discipline and urged them to demonstrate an enthusiastic spirit for the forthcoming Indian Ocean Islands Games which will be held in 2019 in Mauritius.
Jeux des Jeunes Talents 2018
The second edition of the Jeux des Jeunes Talents 2018, with the objectives to making sports accessible to youngsters at regional and national levels is being held from 14 to 16 November 2018, in different centres and stadiums around the island.
2000 athletes from Mauritius and Rodrigues are competing in 11 sports disciplines, which are namely: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Handball, Cycling, Football, Judo, Table Tennis, Mini Volleyball and Swimming.
