GIS - 05 September, 2017: World Suicide Prevention Day, aimed at preventing suicide by promoting worldwide action, will be observed on 10 September 2017. The theme for this year is “Take a minute, change a life”.
In this context, a series of activities to raise awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death will be organised by the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare. They include: a one-day workshop to reflect on the role of the community on suicide prevention; sensitisation programmes to encourage the community to assist in suicide prevention; and training courses to raise awareness on suicidal tendencies and depression.

In Mauritius, the rate of suicide is around 6 per 100,000 persons annually.  Sixty-six suicides and 356 cases of attempt at suicide had been reported in 2016.

World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day, which first started in 2003, is observed on September 10 each year. According to World Health Organisation, nearly 3000 people on average commit suicide daily. About one million people die by suicide each year. Suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death which is influenced by psycho-social, cultural and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors. There is strong evidence indicating that adequate prevention can reduce suicide rates.

World Suicide Prevention Day gives organisations, government agencies and individuals a chance to promote awareness about suicide, mental illnesses associated with suicide, as well as suicide prevention.
