GIS - 13 October, 2015: The Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security will organise a series of activities on the occasion of the World Food Day 2015 commemorated on 16 October. The theme for World Food Day 2015, proclaimed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), is: Social Protection and Agriculture: breaking the cycle of rural poverty.
An exhibition cum sales of agricultural and agro-processing products will be organised at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, and Bois des Amourettes Football Ground.
Other activities that would be held at the SSR Botanic Garden include demonstration of grafting techniques, roof-gardening, container gardening systems and agro-processing techniques.
An exhibition of sheltered farming structures, rain water harvesting systems, hydroponic, tube-o-ponic and bioponic structures will also be held as well as live demonstration of local food dishes and culinary competition of local dishes.
World Food Day was established by FAO's Member Countries at the Organisation's Twentieth General Conference in November 1979. The date chosen, 16 October, is the anniversary of FAO's founding in 1945.
