- 04 December, 2018:
A tree planting ceremony was held, yesterday, at La Citadelle in Port Louis to mark the United Nations (UN) Day 2018 which is celebrated annually on 24 October to highlight the global efforts and achievements of the United Nations Organisation. The Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, and the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius, Ms Christine Umutoni, were present on that occasion.
A joint initiative of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in collaboration with the GEF Small Grants Programme and the Fondation Ressources et Nature, the activity forms part of the reforestation project of La Citadelle and is aligned with the UN Day theme, ‘Greening the Blue’. The focus is on the protection of the planet, and on the need for everyone to actively and meaningfully engage in creating a sustainable environment and to ensure the utilisation of resources responsibly.
The initiative involves the planting of some 50 endemic trees, at La Citadelle, that have been selected according to the soil and climatic conditions of the site and which require little maintenance after three years of maturation. The financial assistance obtained from the United Nations Development Programme enabled the recovery of around 2,5 hectares of forest.
In the context of the UN Week, a series of activities that will run from 29 November to 04 December 2018, have been organised to reaffirm the continuous partnership of the UN with various stakeholders in Mauritius and to reflect on the UN’s achievements so far, especially in the context of the UN Reform, presently underway.
