Universiade Games 2019 to promote sporting culture among tertiary institutions

GIS – 01 October, 2019: The fifth edition of the Universiade Games, aimed at fostering sporting values and encouraging sports competitions among different universities of Mauritius, officially opened, yesterday, at the Maryse Justin Stadium in Réduit. The games, being held over a period of two weeks, is an initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the National Council for Sports in School and Universities.
The objective of the Universiade Games 2019 is to enhance students’ experience by giving them the opportunity to represent their institution in sports competitions. It will also provide a platform to promote the development of sports and recreational activities in tertiary organisations.
Athletics has been included for the first time in the games. Some 800 young people of 12 different universities are participating in this fifth edition.
Universiade Games 2019
The sports disciplines comprise namely Athletics (Men & Women); Badminton (Men & Women); Basketball (Men & Women); Football (Men & Women); Table Tennis (Men & Women); and Volleyball (Men & Women).
The venues for the Games are as follows:

Football               Centre National François Blaquart, Réduit; Mauritius Football Association, Trianon; and, Côte D’Or National Sports Complex.


Volleyball             UOM (University of Mauritius) Gymnasium, Réduit.


Basketball            Phoenix Gymnasium.


Table Tennis        Mauritius Institute of Education Gymnasium, Réduit; and, National Table Tennis Center, Beau Bassin.


Badminton           UOM, Réduit.


Athletics             Maryse Justin Stadium, Réduit.
