GIS– 19 September 2017: An international seminar to mark the Centenary of the Abolition of Indentureship in the British Empire will be organised from 28 to 30 September 2017 by the University of Mauritius (UoM). The theme retained is Ending Indenture: Comparative Perspectives 1880-1930.
The main objectives of the seminar are to analyse particular themes, such as the continuity between slavery and indentureship in the global capitalist order and within countries and the consequences of these regimes on the people. It also aims at studying the situation of indentured immigrants in its last years of immigration and the role of Mauritius in the campaign against indentured immigration.
The social and economic activities of descendants of indentured immigrants in the immediate post-indentured period in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean will be also be analysed during the seminar.
Some 22 participants from India, France, Reunion Island, the Seychelles and South Africa will attend.
